1938 23' Gaff-Rigged Cutter

This is an true BARN FIND. This sailboat was found stored away in a barn in the

Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It had been stored in there for years. I bought the boat

as a long-term winter project, but just don't have the time to devote to it. Here are the

specifics of the boat as I understand them. This is a 1938 William Atkin design

Gaff-rigged cutter. It is 23' long and has a showl draft so it draws only 2'6". It carries

a main sail and jib, and has 2 sets of sails, one set cotton and the other dacron, both

in good condition. It has an onboard Universal gas engine, but I haven't run the engine

so I can't state the condition of it. It has a wooden hull, in solid condition. I started to

work on the hull, replacing the cotton beading between the hull planks, but that's as far

as I have gone. A double-axel trailer is included with the boat.
The boat was originally owned by Alfred Hershey, a prominent professor of Chemistry,

who received a Nobel Prize for his work. It was part of an estate sale after his death.
$3,400
